Your eyes are the windows to your soul, or so the saying goes. Research has proven that in many ways the eyes are windows but not just to your soul, but to your body as a whole. It seems that when we struggle with our eyesight it could be a warning of some underlying issue we are not seeing. For example, your eyes can become pigmented which can be a clear sign of ocular melanoma, a type of cancer.
Obviously, we’re not trying to scare you but if you do feel there is something unusual about your eyes, then you should book an appointment with a doctor immediately!
On that point, one of the best ways to take care of your eyes is to regularly visit your ophthalmologist. Lots of diseases can be detected in the eyes including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and cancer. Don’t be the last know, visit a doctor immediately.
This must be a record put on repeat but we promise you, the best way you can take care of your health is through your diet. Taking care of your eyes is no different. The foods to consume are leafy greens like spinach, collards, and kale. When you are getting older, vitamin C and Zinc become an issue so you would need to consume lots of foods that have them including oranges, citrus fruits, oysters, salmon, and plant protein. Eggs, nuts, beans, and tuna are also helpful with their omega-3 nutritional value.
Diseases that affect thousands of people like obesity and diabetes can actually cause further issues in the eyes that can lead to blindness. Damage to your eyes can come from a variety of reasons including but not limited to:
Lack of protection
Obviously, when you are at work in the field or on a construction site, you are required to wear protected eyeglasses, we hope you understand how this requirement is at the utmost importance. Lack of protection for your eyes means that you expose them to a lot of foreign bodies that they need not be exposed to like glass, fire, wood, cement, etc.
Away from dangerous construction sites, protecting your eyes from the sun and the bright lights is important. Don’t read too much in the dark, don’t watch too much movies in dark rooms, and don’t assume that your neon lights are helping. Your eyes work hard all day collecting information and reflecting it to your brain, give them a rest!
Too much exposure to light
Wear sunglasses, and don’t buy them cheap. It is understandable that some people prefer to have fancy looking sunglasses without paying 300 QR. However, cheap sunglasses were designed with cheap material, which means that it does nothing to protect your eyes. Research and social experiments have proven that our eyes can be tricked into believing it is dark when we wear cheap sunglasses, the pupil will open up to let more light in but sadly that light is harmful as the film/lens of the glasses is letting in the UV light.
Choose darker sunglasses that offer UV protection. Make sure you test out the glasses before purchasing them. Taking care of your eyes at a young age means that they would still serve you well when you get older. Always remember that. If you are unsure what type of sunglasses work for you, ask your eye doctor.
Smoking, eating lots of sugar, consuming lots of fried foods are all bad habits that lead to deteriorating eye health. Your optic nerves suffer a great deal when you are not taking care of yourself leading to issues like cataracts. The faster you lead a healthy lifestyle the better your eye health will be.
Bad habits don’t stop at consumption, you could be a daredevil who tries different tricks to scare yourself or you could have discovered ways to mess with your eyes for entertainment, all you need to know is whatever you do to your eyes that is not “normal” is essentially harmful. Accidents can happen anytime and it is up to you to protect your eyes.
The ultimate reason our eyesight isn’t as strong as ever, the screen. All the different kinds of screens you have surrounding you cause much more than strain to your eyes, here are just some of the things that they cause:
- Blurry vision
- Dry eyes
- Trouble focusing
- Physical pain, mostly in the back, neck and shoulders
Are you going to let these issues ruin your eyesight? Make sure you visit an eye doctor immediately for a checkup. You never know if you already developed an issue.
